Discharge of Lithium Battery

When battery is not used, it needs to store in room temperature and avoid it from humidity to prevent it from being corrosive. The common question is how long battery can be stored? Battery itself, when not connected to any load, can consume its own energy. The term for this is called Self Discharge.

Non rechargeable batteries can be store for more than 5 years (Alkaline, Lithium Metal). When battery is not used the charge will remain inside the battery. However, rechargeable batteries will keep losing the charge even when there is no connection to any load as it stays in shelf. After some period, it needs to charge to avoid battery becoming undervoltage (cannot be charge) and this cause the battery cannot store energy.

Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) has lower self-discharge rate compare to other rechargeable Lithium batteries. The rate is about 3% per month, so when you store 100 percent LFP battery for a month, it will reduce to 97% by the next month. And one more advantage for this type of battery is the Depth of Discharge (DoD) can be 100 percent from its capacity comparing to Lead Acid battery that only about 50 percent of its capacity. This means, a 100 Ah LFP can provide 100 Ah charge, but 100 Ah Lead Acid battery only gives 50 Ah charge when using it.

This advantage gives LFP a perfect choice to build into Energizer Portable Power Station and use Energizer as a backup device. The compact size with great power can be stored in cabinet or bookshelf when is not needed and the capacity will remain stable in some period, at least charge it in every 6 months to maintain the battery in full capacity when urgent things happen. It will give maximum power to energize all daily needs devices.
