Why Does Battery Management System Matter?

The use of lithium-ion batteries nowadays has been generally getting high ratio in the family range, and its capacity and power needs are also rising. The safety of using electricity is crucial for such high voltage and amps for higher power & capacity to meet the majority of electrical devices that the whole family needs. Battery Management System, also as called BMS. The chip is used to come with battery home energy storage, usually consisting of a number of monomers in a series-parallel manner. Its main function is to track the statement of the battery to keep it continuously safe operation.

How Does It Work?

Normally, there are 3 parts that have different layers in the system. Each side holds its duty.

  • Bottom: battery monitoring chip, is responsible for collecting all kinds of information about a single battery cell to calculate the state of charge (SOC) and state of health (SOH). If there is any abnormal state, the information will be uploaded to the BUS.
  • Middle: The master control chip gathers battery information from the monitoring chip and analyzes SOC and SOH.
  • Top: The general control. It is responsible for the overall coordination within the system and the exchange of external information and controls the operation process of the whole BMS system according to the external request.  

BMS in Application

BMS is not only used for home batteries but off-grid devices. Portable power stations, also known as solar generators, are the typical choice for designers and manufacturers. In the very fundamental version of BMS, it can only track battery SOC, voltage, amps, temperature, etc. Not all products have high-quality BMS. Like Energizer portable power stations. For example, if the battery pack is overloaded or over-current, the system will cut off the relay and stop the power supply to the battery.
